  • Joanne Cornelius

    Joanne Cornelius

Joanne Cornelius (nee Maloney) Craftsman enlisted in the Australian Army in 1987 at the age of 16 through the Army Apprentice School, Bonegilla, graduating as an Apprentice Sergeant and Mobile Plant Mechanic. She was among the first female RAEME apprentices trained to identical combat and trade standards as her male peers — including full rifle handling, fitness testing, and Canungra training.

During her nine years of service, Joanne was posted to 2 Base Workshops, 2/3 Field Engineer Regiment, 17 Construction Squadron, and 101 Field Workshops. In 1991, she was believed to be the first female RAEME tradeswoman to serve within a field-force and combat engineering regiment, at a time when such postings were still restricted to men. Her quiet determination and professional skill redefined the boundaries for women in Defence technical roles.

After discharging in 1995, Joanne built a 30-year civilian career in the automotive and vocational training sectors. She progressed from Senior Mechanic to Service Advisor, Service Manager, and eventually CEO and owner of her own Registered Training Organisation, where she taught hundreds of tradespeople and thousands of trainers across Australia.

Now retired at 55, Joanne advocates for the stories of women in RAEME and Defence technical trades to be properly recorded and actively supports females pursuing careers in automotive and mechanical trades.

  • LT Alina Hutton

    LT Alina Hutton

Alina grew up with the sound of engines and the smell of motor oil, spending countless hours around classic cars with her dad. A self-confessed “revhead”, she never imagined her passion for cars would one day take her to the heart of Formula One engineering.

Last year she spent a six-week work placement with motorsport powerhouse McLaren Racing in England.  After a week of training in McLaren’s design software, she joined the Design and Engineering Group, working alongside a senior engineer on projects that push the limits of performance, often measured in milliseconds.

Now back in Australia completing her thesis on improving the performance of mid-90s Porsche engines at a Sydney racing workshop.

Her Mechanical Engineering Degree completed, she is posted to 7 CSSB. We look forward to her insights and expect to see some revved-up Bushmasters and Hawkeis hitting the training area soon.
